Capital Questions - Carmel McGlone

If it’s been a hard week at work and I’m in need of a drink I’ll be at … the Ivy Cabaret upstairs at The Garden Club. Best cabaret in town!

Having a … sing-song and a Savvy.

Then the next day if I need a slap-up feed and a cup of Wellington’s finest coffee I’ll be at … my friend’s café Olive. Heart and soul to be found there. If it’s a seriously bad ‘morning-after’ I’ll head down to Maranui. Thank God they saved it. The sea air does wonders too.

I always find if you need some culture you can’t go past … the Cake Tin on a big occasion. Unbeatable for atmosphere. Reminds me of Shakespeare’s Globe. No roof, with the yardlings [SB1] grunting it out in every weather but closest to the action.

And when I need some exercise, it’s off to … the garden. Well not yet … but after the Green Party fundraiser last week I’m a (nearly) born-again gardener. I’m gonna get chooks too.

My favourite Wellington landmark has to be … Piri Weepu. A sight to behold. Monumentally good.

The Wellingtonian I would take to a pub quiz is … please see above. We may not win but I could put my hand on his thigh to comfort him when we get the answer wrong.

I am most ashamed to have never visited … the New Zealand Cricket Museum at the Basin Reserve … can’t think why. Maybe next year.

I know I shouldn’t, but Wellington’s best-kept secret is … a puzzling wee monument with a brilliant view up the back of Kingston (pictured). Right in the ‘river of wind’ corridor, with a beautiful view out to the South Island. Gotta love that wind.

[SB1]OK? Not quite sure what a yardling is!
