Capital Questions - Heather Du Plessis-Allan
This month - ONE News reporter Heather Du Plessis-Allan answers the questions for onceIf it’s been a hard week at work and I’m in need of a drink I’ll be… at The Occidental across the road from work… having a… beer with TVNZers and their better work stories. Or at the Wine Loft having a quick wine with my man before some function where I have to share him.
Then the next day, if I need a slap-up feed and a cup of Wellington’s finest coffee, I’ll be at… Sir Breadwins. The coffee’s greatand everybody in there is so effortlessly cool. I hang out a little too long just to absorb some of the coolness. The latest trend in the news room for lunch is ‘Sushi B!’ on Woodward Street. It’s so good I dreamt about it once.
I always find if I need some culture it’s hard to go past… the Paramount cinema. It’s a regular date-night spot of ours because they have comfy seats, let you take your wine in and show great art flicks that leave you feeling smarter than those punters who just watched a blockbuster movie.
And if it’s exercise I need, it’s hard to beat… the TVNZ touch team. I joined it on a rebound after being kicked off the indoor netball team - apparently for being rubbish. But I’ve never looked back. It’s the only time your hand can make contact with a man’s face without getting you into trouble.
My favourite Wellington landmark is… the city itself. Coming from the airport at night on the scenic route around the bays, you get the most stunning view...even if it’s a crappy day.
The Wellingtonian I would take to a pub quiz is… my colleague, Simon Bradwell, because he knows everything. And if he doesn’t know it, he’ll probably argue with the quizmaster until he proves himself right. Mental note: Google what he says to see if it’s actually true.
The suburb I am most ashamed to have never visited is… Owhiro Bay. I hear it’s beautiful but I’ve actively avoided it. A high-profile murder around there on one of the first weekends I moved to Wellington has made me consciously afraid of the place.
If I had to be reincarnated as an animal I’d choose to come back as… a spider. I would love to be a fly on the wall in so many rooms around this town, but flies only last a day. Spiders, on the other hand, get to hang around too and they’re scarier than sissy flies.
I know I shouldn’t, but Wellington’s best kept secret is… the bakery in Hataitai. They do chocolate éclairs that actually taste as good as you imagine they do in the movies.
